FASHION AS A FORCE FOR GOOD

Stella McCartney’s signature style of sharp tailoring, natural confidence and sexy femininity has wowed the industry since she launched her eponymous line in 2001. A lifelong vegan, Stella translated her ethical values into her own label – refusing to use fur or leather in an industry built on handbags and shoes – and proving to top houses values and businesses are thriving.

Since 2011, Stella McCartney has been working in partnership with Kenya for a portion of her line’s handmade accessories, specifically in screen-printing and tailoring. A new video by Stella McCartney x the Ethical Fashion Initiative showcases a behind the scenes look at the brand’s devotion and positive impact in the region.

“5,000 people in Kenya are involved with the Initiative. Ninety percent of them are women, mostly from disadvantaged or isolated communities. Poverty and female inequality can not be eradicated by simply dishing out cash handouts. Instead, they provide employment and support … the empowerment of the women working for us has to be one of the meaningful to me.” – Stella McCartney

GiftWrapping

PRESENTATION IS EVERYTHING

Make your own holiday gift wrapping this year.

The older I get, the more the holidays excite me again. The tradition of gift giving and meal sharing coupled with being near those we love is a special pause I am really looking forward to. For me, it’s a time to get together and let go of all other static in our lives and just enjoy the company.

Over the last two years, since I’ve been on path to buy ethically and ‘buy better’ (thank you Vivienne Westwood for that universal meme that never gets old) with it, gift giving is also more meaningful. I put more time into the people on my list. And for me, the best way I love to show that is through the presentation. Presentation is the cherry on top – or in this case literally the ribbon that ties it all together.

As I gathered inspiration from around the web for my own holiday wrapping, I came across these eight elegant ideas. I hope you are as inspired as I am + have a lovely holiday season

Everlane’s Black Friday Fund Celebration

RAISING OVER $113,000 FOR THEIR SILK FACTORY, EVERLANE INVITES CUSTOMERS TO CELEBRATE THEIR COMMUNITY

For the past two years, Everlane has shut down their site on Black Friday as a way to encourage more thoughtful consumption. Items sold on the e-commerce only fashion platform never go on sale, because they don’t believe in building a sale markup into their products to begin with. This is part of their mission of radical transparency: to educate customers around the real costs and origins of the products we all buy. Last night we celebrated the recent success of their inaugural Black Friday Fund, a way to give back to their community.
