New Threads: Hanky Panky

I’m a dedicated Hanky Panky girl. So when it came time to buying some new intimates, I didn’t have to think twice. Not exactly–M y vow. I had to look deeper. Afraid at what this trusty customer would find, I embarked on my search.

This love story continues–not like a tragic Greek mythology, but more like Scorsese’s True Romance. When I discovered their dedicated US production practices I was as happy as a whale (maybe not a fitting comparison when writing about lingerie, but you get it.)

Vogue’s Feb 2013 issue in the column Style Ethics featured Hanky Panky upcycled bralette made from vintage handkerchiefs

Hanky Panky, started making deliciously simple undies in 1977 and they’ve kept quality, comfort and ethics at the center of their business ever since. Their manufacturing has always been in the Northeastern United States. All the fabric and trim used in the Signature Lace thongs + panties are knitted in the US. The Supima cotton fibers, used in the lining, are from USA grown cotton. They’ve also started a Cotton with Conscious line, made with organic cotton. Their offices are based in Manhattan, and warehouse in Queens. And stand as one of the founding members of the organization Made In NYC.

Beyond domestic production, Hanky Panky is dedicated to sustainability in other areas of their company, too.

Zero Fabric Waste: They donate 100% of fabric scraps to arts and crafts groups.

Recyclable packaging: Packaging concepts are executed with 100% recycled paper and board, and are conceived as keepsake items for an extended life.

Recyclable office supplies: Use only 100% recycled paper for all printers and copy machines.

No plastic water bottles: Instead of water coolers with plastic bottles, the offices installed filters to purify NYC tap water.

My latest purchase: Hanky Pankys. I also picked up a few for Mother’s Day gifts, not pictured here. Every woman should feel adorned!

This also bears the point, there are so many companies that are already producing locally, increasing sustainability practices, but not flaunting it as a marketing tool. You don’t have to look far, just dig a little past the label + price tag and you might be pleasantly surprised, as I was.

Ladies, need some sustainable, locally produced, affordable lingerie? Look no further. You can find Hanky Pankys in boutiques + department stores around the US.

Local is at the heart of the sustainability movement. Local supply chains, local food, local garments, local music. Local manufacturing–making goods in your city, neighborhood, or town–is truly self sustaining. (Did I say local enough yet?)

When our communities become self sustaining, they grow, and progress with what’s around them, and as a result, each item embodies a character of culture.

It’s quite boring that we can get the same item in Paramus, New Jersey or Tokyo, Japan or Buenos Aries, Argentina. Region specific goods are what makes travel exciting, and products exclusive.

And if you’re not down with this idea, hate traveling but still have a thirst for wooden shoes Stockholmian, you can still find that sustainable, locally produced good on Amazon. Hey, that’s the beauty of the internet.
